NaNoWriMo Eve (AKA Halloween)

I'm going to be writing a novel in, like, two hours. I'm super pumped, I love NaNoWriMo. It will be difficult this year with my work and school schedule, and my creative writing class might actually get in the way, but I've already pre-ordered my winner shirt because I've never not won.

I don't know what my novel is called, but I do know how it will start and its setting. I have a magic system worked in, and that magic system has led to a social system kinda sorta. I don't have a villain yet, but that will hopefully come with time.

My novel will take place in a magically modern society (so instead of technology they have the magical equivalent). There is a certain type of magican, tentatively called the Warrior Mage, who are seen as lesser mages. Main girls parents are high class, very powerful mages. Main girl wants to be Warrior Mage. Her parents do not want this for their daughter. Stuff probably happens after that. I dunno too much yet.

This will be fun!

Four Days In!

So normally I would post on the first day my word count with an excerpt of what I'd written so far. I didn't have the internet yet on the first day, so that didn't happen, and I kind of forgot until now. :D

So interesting things about my NaNovel so far. When I started it at midnight, it suddenly decided that it wanted to be told from first person. I've never done that before, I always write third person with multiple perspectives, which is not going to happen here. It'll be fun to see how this works out.

In a desperate attempt to find a name for my characters, I searched all those name meaning websites for a cool name and none of them seemed to work and my character hated them all and I finally just told him to shut up, you're Roy from now on! So he's Roy. And the other is Dan, Dan was less argumentative about his name as well, but none of them were as good about it as Ari was. Ari was the first name I thought up for her, she loved it, and it stayed. This has reflected her personality I think so far in my novel.

Sometimes browsing the NaNo forums can be dangerous. I hadn't really planned far enough for anything bad to happen in my novel, but then someone in the forums was asking for ideas about something terrible to happen in their novel, I shouted out an idea, and then I realized that I loved that idea and am trying to find a way to implement it into my novel. Those poor characters. I'm not sure if I will do this, or if something else will happen, or if it will just be sunshine and lollipops the whole time, but I don't really want it to be the latter. My bad guys need something to do, and they love that first idea that I had.

I really should be writing my novel instead of this. Especially since I have been issued a challenge to have a higher word count than the person challenging me by Monday. I just need a sledgehammer to get past this minor barrier of a writing block (just a tiny one) and I'm good to go.

Just About Two More Days

NaNoWriMo is nearly upon us! I am super excited and quite scared actually. This is the least prepared I've ever been for a NaNo. Even in the first year when i didn't do any paper planning (I didn't jot down any notes) I still knew more about that story than I know about this one! Last year I had a similar scare in that a few weeks before it started I didn't know what to write, but once I found out what I was to write, I made pages and pages of notes. This year I have a concept, some dragons (always important), and maybe the first chapter vaguely outlined in my head.

Now I blame my general unpreparedness on everything that's been happening in the past month, a month I usually reserve for NaNo preparing. Foreclosure is my new least favorite word. Its gotten me down in the dumps, a mind frame that I am generally unfamiliar with. Then, to add to that, I've been all sorts of sick this week, and sometimes being sick gives me a great excuse to stay up and write ("Why aren't you sleeping?" "I can't sleep, I'm sick!") this time we've also been moving all of our stuff out while I've been sick. And this is probably only half of whats been on my mind! Needless to say, my NaNo Novel has been taking a back seat in a month where it is supposed to be driving.

Okay, that's enough crying. I usually get the pre-NaNo jitters. Two years ago it was the "omigosh I've never done this before am I crazy?!" jitters. Last year it was the "My plot is paper thin and I don't have nearly enough in it to fill up 50,000 words, I'm going to fail so bad!" jitters. This year its the "Oh crap, I haven't planned my Novel nearly enough! What am I going to do?" jitters.

I haven't had as much time to plan this novel as I might want. This is bad, but not word count threatening. I have proven in times past that I can fly by the seat of my pants, and often doing stuff like that adds great bonuses to my word count. So take that jitters! I strike you down with my sword of confidence and past experience! BWA HA HA!

I feel better now.

NaNoWriMo's 10 rules and regulations (aka Commandments)

Some post on the NaNo forums talks about our own personal 10 commandments for NaNoWriMo. So yes, I'm stealing ideas twice over with this post :D

NUMBER 1!
Thou shalt not stare at the page for any longer than five minutes without putting words upon it! It mattereth not if those words are utter nonsense, just so long as they are written.

NUMBER 2!
Thou shalt be encouraging towards, and only slightly competitive against, those who are also participating in the National Novel Writing Month.

NUMBER 3!
Thou shalt not take a week long break like thou has wont to do in past Nation Novel Writing Month excursions. Such breaks only serve to add stress and a mad scrambling nearer to the end of the month. Seriously, don't.

NUMBER 4!
Thou shalt remember that there exist other persons in thy household who likely will wish to converse with thee and in turn inquire into thy writings. Thou shalt not ignore these persons, and often their advice on thy novel with be highly valuable.

NUMBER 5!
Thou hast a canine companion that requires sustenance just as much as thee. Thou shalt feed thy canine and also take it outdoors for walks.

NUMBER 6!
Thou shalt not be afraid to kill a character. Thou must remember that three character are essential and should still be alive at the end of thy novel, but all the rest may be treated as cannon fodder as thou seest fit.

NUMBER 7!
Thou shalt avoid that loud and overly large PlayStation 3 that is in thy possession until thou hast gone above and beyond thy word count goal. The same goes for the Wii. Thou shalt not give unto me that look.

NUMBER 8!
Thou shalt remember to remove thy flash drive from the computer upon finishing thy writing. Thou dost not want a repeat of prior incidents.

NUMBER 9!
Thou shalt not forget other personal goals that still bear great importance, even if thou art participating in National Novel Writing Month. Remember, time is quickly disappearing.

NUMBER 10!
Thou shalt write a remarkable novel, even if it needs polishing after the month is over.

That was funner than I expected.

Dragons in The Dragon Ambassador

I wasn't paying attention to the world around me today because I was tired, and while I was zoning out, an idea came to mind, and from that idea, I solved a lot of the problems I had with my novel. These are some of the notes I've made so far for The Dragon Ambassador.

Every magical race has a defining characteristic and an antithesis race. The antithesis race’s defining characteristic is the opposite of the other race. An example would be that Dragon’s characteristic is courage, thus their antithesis, the Shadow Serpent, are creatures of fear. In general, there is a race with a good characteristic and a race with an evil characteristic. There are exceptions, like Elves, who are creatures of boredom, and their antitheses, the Sugar Imps, who are creatures of Excitement, neither of which are evil.

Dragons:
Antitheses to Shadow Serpents, Dragons are beings of courage. They will never run from any situation and will often charge headfirst into them. Since they are huge fire breathing lizards, this caused some misunderstandings and humans came to fear dragons. They can only communicate with other beings that have an equal measure of courage, something that is very rare, and so they had almost no way to communicate with the people who were hunting them down. Often, if there was a human courageous enough, they would be hunting dragons instead of trying to listen to them. Hunted nearly to extinction, they went into hiding until there came a day that an ambassador could be found to speak for them.

Shadow Serpents:
Antitheses to Dragons, Shadow Serpents are beings of fear. They are constantly in hiding from the rest of the world. They stick primarily to the shadows, and as such, their eye sight has diminished, but their other senses have increased. They magically hold shadows to themselves, so that if they should venture into the light, they are surrounded in blackness and no real detail about them can be seen. They are shaped similar to dragons, but it is unknown how far the similarities go. Because of their extreme fear of everything surrounding them, they have developed a hatred for most things, but they are too scared to do anything about it.

Things to Figure Out Before NaNo

So, before NaNoWriMo there are quite a few things I need to figure out about The Dragon Ambassador. Perhaps writing out a list will help me come up with a solution to these problems.

~I need to decide if this will be a more Modern Day Fantasy (like Fablehaven) or if I should create my own Fantasy world like I usually do. At first I was going to do the modern fantasy, but I really like making my own fantasy world. The problem with that is that its time consuming. But still fun.

~I need to finalize the dragons in my story. In every story I write with dragons, they are different, and that is one reason I like writing them, I can always do something new with them. So I need to figure out how my dragons work in this.

~I need to figure out what other fantasy/mythological creatures will be in this story. I know a few, but its good to know what my world consists of.

~I need to name my characters. Always hardest part for me.

~I need a conflict. Right now this is still just an idea with no real plot. Plots are quite important.

~With conflict, I need antagonists. Someone eval must be present to mess things up for my good guys.

~I need to decide on the point of view. My options are having it all from the point of view of one very important character, or splitting it between three very important characters. I've never done a story with just one view point and I want to try, but I'm not sure if this story will allow it.

Thats a pretty good list. I'mma stare at it now and think about it for a while. I'll update this later with a post about my Dragons when I'm done shaping them.

NaNoWriMo 2010!

I know this is my second post today, but no one really pays attention to my book list and this is important. I just realized that its almost November. That means its almost National Novel Writing Month. This will be my third NaNo and I decided long ago what I will be writing. It's called at the moment The Dragon Ambassador. I'll post a few more posts later on about some of my plans for it. Why not now? Well become I haven't really formalized any plans in my head yet :)

VICTORY!

Yes, you read that right, unless you haven't read it yet. I'll wait.

...

It really shouldn't take this long to read a little picture.

:P

Yes, I won NaNoWriMo and surpassed 50,000 words early this morning. Happiness and excitment were my guests as I crossed the finish line and they greeted me with bear hugs. I still need to finish the novel itself, but hopefully that won't take much longer. I also need to do the minor edits to remove the typos, but should anyone want to read it, I'll be happy to send it too you so long as I know who you are. ^_^

Oh, I thought I'd mention, my novel made my mom cry. It was late and she was tired, but she still cried. This was a great boost to my self esteem.

Oh, wait, I needs a youtube, no winner post is complete without a youtube.

Skies of Fire

So I decided to do the Skies of Fire one after giving it some thought. I finally thought up a plot for it after telling myself that the skies being on fire didn't have to happen in the beginning. So far I have a basic idea of about three characters, the culture of the world it happens in, and perhaps the government. Oh, and though it is cliche, I also have a prophecy in it, that goes as follows:

When the skies burn as if on fire the battle to determine the fate of the world will scream across the earth. Three noble warriors who will be known and loved by all will come forth to fight the battle, yet should they choose not to fight, the world will be torn asunder and all will be lost.

I'm still not sure about a lot of things, but that is what insomnia is for. While I am calling it skies of Fire, that is only a working title, and once more of the plot happens, I will perhaps give it a better title.

It's Almost November!

You know what that means right? It means that it's almost time for National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo for short!

If you don't know, let me explain. NaNoWriMo is where all November long you are striving to pump out a 50,000 word novel. For nerds like me, it is great fun. For more information, check out http://www.nanowrimo.org/.

Last year I wrote The True Story of Roswell, New Mexico (A Blatant Fiction). I had been planning it for months before NaNoWriMo and so last year was a success. This year is different. I still am unsure of what to write.

There are a few ideas, but I'm not sure which to choose or if any of them will be able to produce 50,000 words. They are as follows:

A Super Smash Brothers Brawl fanfic. I've wanted to do one for a while now, and NaNoWriMo would be the perfect opportunity and would pretty much ensure that I would finish, but I'm not sure how it would turn out.

Night Guardian. A knight who guards the castle of some kingdom by night with his special abilities to travel by shadow. This is just something I think about as I lay down trying to fall asleep. I'm not sure how plot worthy it is.

Skies on fire. I can't remember where this idea stemmed from, but basically I have an image of the skies on fire and a worried people looking up at the fire knowing that terrible things are coming. But see, that's all that this idea has going for it so far. At least the other idea's have plot bunnies, this is just a picture in my head. But its a picture that I sooooo want to write out and give a story too. I'm, just stumped as to what the story should be.

I also kind of want to write something with dragons. But then again, I always want to write something with dragons.

So what think ye? Any input?

I also fiddled around with the layout colors to make them less depressing. I don't know what I was thinking with the previous colors really. Any input on this would also be appreciated.

I'M A WINNER!

I just crossed the 50,000 word finish line for NaNoWriMo and I couldn't be happier. This is about how I feel.

If anyone feels any desire to read my novel, please comment or email me and I will send it to you if you are deemed trustworthy. Keep in mind that this is a very rough first draft and there are going to be many mistakes and that it isn't finshed yet. When I finish it, I will post again and express my further happy.

40,000 Words Left

I finally hit 40,000 words, which means I only have 10,000 left. If I write 5,000 more today and 5,000 tomorrow, I'll finish. I plan on writing as many as I can today so I'm not scrambling to finish tomorrow. Sundays are always hard days for my word count, so I need to write as much as I can today. Who knows, if I push myself, I may just finish tonight. Here's hoping :)

Halfway Point

I just crossed the halfway point for my Novel. That's right, I'm at 25,000 words. I have a week left to get my word count to 50,000 and I WILL DO IT! I've been sick almost all of november, and that has made my word count suffer. The internet hasn't been much help either, as every time I procrastinate, its been there with open arms.

No more procrastination. I must forsake the internet for the next week until I get my word count to where its supposed to be. After this post, the only reason that I go on the internet will be to listen to my playlist which helps me write. When I make it to 40K (and I will) I'll make another post.

Yikes

I'm falling dangerously behind on my NaNoWriMo novel. Uh oh. By the end of today, I should be around 20,000 words, yet I am only just above 15,000. I need to get my rear end in gear and write more. Personally, I blame facebook. Its the first and last site on the internet that I go to, and sucks up a lot of my time. My excuse is that's its week two, which is always the hardest week, according to everyone who does this. I'll do my best to write as much as I can to close the gap between my word count and the 20,000 word goal for today, wish me luck.

NaNo Status and a Random Writing

In case you are wondering, I have 9,178 words so far in my NaNo. It's coming along swimmingly :)

Last night after I got my word count that high, I stopped writing and started reading. I was reading the book, "The Long Patrol" by Brian Jaques. Whilst reading it a random plot decided to make my head its home and immediatly demanded that I write it. I wrote three paragraphs and got back to reading. Here is what I wrote:

The night was dark and quiet, most people having already gone to sleep for the night. If one were to listen closely they would hear the soft footsteps of a young man walking slowly through the town. At random intervals, the young man again became visible as the moon took away from the clouds covering it, but that never lasted long. The young man didn’t stop until he came by a list posted on the wall of a building that he was going by. This list was posted all over the city, the young man reasoned; it was happenstance that I should pass by this one.

He couldn’t help but smile as he saw his name at the top of the list. He had already known that his name was there, but it felt good to see it just the same. There had been a crowd of people at each of these lists earlier in the day after they had been posted, hundreds of young men and women trying to see the list, wanting to see if they had been chosen. The young man had been watching them with scorn, how could they expect to succeed with such poor patience. He had heard many of them shouting when they found their names on the list, and the young man had taken special note of each who had made it, scrutinizing them, weighing them. None that he had seen would present any challenge for him, he was sure of it. The young man had to smile when, one by one, the people in the crowd had read aloud his name and asked if anyone knew who the man was that had made it to the top of the list. Of course none would know of him. He wasn’t foolhardy enough to show himself to those who were likely to make it on the list, possibly exposing a weakness that could be taken advantage of in a fire situation. He could see that he needn’t have worried.

The young man was about to leave the list when he saw who was directly below him. It wasn’t surprising really, that she had made it so high up on the list with her skill, what was surprising was that she had even attempted to make it to the list in the first place. He hadn’t expected that. She would be his only problem, for she knew all of his weaknesses, even some that he didn’t know himself. Yet even with her on the list, he knew that he would ultimately succeed, nothing was going to stand in his way.

Wasn't that fun? Now if I'm ever going to go anywhere with this, I need to know a few things. Who is this young man? What does the list say that they accomplished or successfully joined? Who is the woman that will give him his problem? I have no idea myself. Any suggestions?

NaNoWriMo '08

This year for NaNoWriMo I am writing a novel called "The True Story of Roswell, New Mexico (A Blatant Fiction)." I started last night and I have 3,280 words so far out of 50,000 needed to win. Here is a little of what I have written so far.

“Crap, crap, crap ,crap!” Kitom said.

Kitom had been flying through space at probably illegal speeds when his ship’s engines decided to die right in the orbit of some planet. He was trying his best to start the engines up again, but nothing was working.

“Sir, the engines have gone off line,” The ship’s computer said.

“Thank you for that computer,” Kitom said. “Can you turn them back on please?”

“Attempting to initiate request…” The computer said. “Negative. The engines will not start up again. I’m sorry.”

Kitom let out a growl of frustration as he hit the dashboard. The ship rumbled a bit and started falling towards the planet. Kitom groaned.

“Sir, the ship is currently falling into the gravitational pull of the planet, please pull up.”

“I can’t pull up! The engines are dead!” Kitom shouted at the computer.

“Please turn on the engines so that you won’t fall to the planet sir,” the computer said.

“You just told me that they won’t turn on!” Kitom shouted.

“I am sorry for the misinformation sir.”

“Misinformation? So they can turn on?” Kitom asked.

“Attempting to restore power to engines…” The computer started. “Failure. Engines will not receive power.”

Kitom yelled again. He looked out of the front display and looked at the planet. It was so very blue. He hadn’t ever seen a planet that color before. If he was one of those nature hippies that plagued the fourth planet of the star Ashtron, he probably would have found it pretty.

“Sir, please don’t make impact with the planet,” The computer said.

Kitom wanted to chuck something at his computer right about now, except that would make his problems worse. “What do you propose I do about this problem computer?”

“Please turn the engines on first sir,” the computer said.

Kitom’s eye twitched for a moment. “The engines don’t work! Remember?”

“Attempting to restore power to engines,” the computer said yet again.

Kitom looked out the front display again. It was red. His ship was being pulled in fast, the hull was heating up. “Computer, stop giving power to engines! Turn on the atmosphere shields!”

“Confirmed. Atmosphere shields up and running.”

Kitom saw the Atmosphere shields going up. Hopefully they would be able to withstand this planets atmosphere. At least they slowed his decent considerably.

“Thank you computer,” Kitom said. “Do we have any information about this planet that we’re falling towards?”

“Searching database, please wait,” the computer said.
